Spring Term
Welcome once again to Apple Class. Apple Class is a mixed Year
1 and 2 class of 26 children. Since mid-November we have had
Mrs Morris working with us as our class Teaching and Learning
Assistant.
Literacy
In Literacy we have looked at traditional stories in particular
Jack and the Beanstalk. The children practised telling the story
using 'Story Maps', acting it out, before having a go at writing
their own. We then adapted the story and wrote 'Jenny and the
Sunflower'. We are currently writing instructions and will be
shortly writing reports based on different animals. Look at
our photos on the website.
Science
In Science we have been looking at the unit of work 'Changing
Materials'. This has mainly focused on how ingredients change
when cooked. See some of our wonderful photos and have a go
at making 'Chip's Cheesy Potato Twists'. This half term we will
be looking at plants and animals in the environment, followed
by the unit 'Variation'. We will be visiting Tropaquaria on
the 24th March to make this work more relevant and enjoyable.
PE
In PE, we have been focusing on Gymnastics, building sequences
of movements involving balances, stretches, jumps and rolls.
For outdoor PE, weather permitting, we have been developing
our throwing and catching skills, leading into small-sided games.
These units of work will continue after half-term. On the 21st
May we will be going on an integrated sports day to Chilton
Trinity.
ART
In our Art, we have used the theme 'Visitors from another Planet'
to illustrate imaginary aliens and their planets. We have designed
and made alien masks and used music by Holst -The Planets -
to help inspire us with mark making. This half term the children
will be working on a special project looking at global issues.
They will be using different materials to continue making models.
Geography
In geography, we our finding out about our locality, including
the school grounds. We will be looking at how we travel to school
and how far away we live. After Easter, we will be looking at
the wider community.
ICT
In our ICT lessons, we are learning to programme mini 'robots'
to follow a route. We have been linking this with our Literacy
instructions unit of work.
Wherever possible, we have tried to link units of work to make
the learning more enjoyable and relevant. Please look at the
website for pictures and photos.
