ELM CLASS Years 5 and 4 Miss Thompson and Mrs Jolley

Welcome to Elm class!

We are very, very lucky in Elm Class because we have 2 teachers!!! We have Mrs. Jolley on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss Thompson on Thursday and Friday.

This term we will be studying Tudor exploration. We will be learning how people explored the world during Tudor times and what conditions where like for the men at sea. Sir Francis Drake was a famous explorer and we will be finding out about his voyages.

We will be linking our Literacy lessons to our Geography topic by reading a Michael Morpurgo
book called "Kensuke's Kingdom". We will focus on the character's journey and then by using the world map chart the progress of Morpurgo's character by looking at the countries he visits, Brazil, South Africa, St.Helena and Australia.

During Literacy, in the first half of the autumn term, we have been studying Japanese forms of poetry called Haikus. A Haiku is like a snapshot. The poet uses words instead of a camera to create the picture.
Our theme was autumn and we worked together to create our own special Haikus.

Please have a look at some of our Haikus written by Cara, Leah, Rhys and Lydia.

During PSHCE we established our class rules that we all had a say in. They are displayed in our classroom. We have also been learning about what a democracy is and why people can vote. We also discussed who can vote and indeed who they can vote for.

Numeracy is always fun in our class. We often have times tables races against the stopwatch. We also have "55 club" which encourages and helps us learn our number facts. Here you can see Edward, Amy and Leah working hard on sorting out fractions.

Wake and Shake is an important start to our school day.
We all take part in an energetic dance routine to "Is this the way to Amarillo?"
