PHOTO GALLERY - Beech Class - Health and the Environment Week (19.05.08 - 23.05.08)

Westover Green's second 'Creativity Week' was very much welcome in Beech class as it followed the Year 6 SATs week! We were particularly excited by the title of Health and the Environment as we knew it would give us the opportunity to make some healthy food (and eat it of course)!

In Science we looked at what we needed to eat to have a healthy diet. We discovered that a healthy diet was in fact a balanced diet. After much discussion, we decided that a sandwich could combine all the food groups we needed for a balanced meal. So, the children made some healthy sandwiches and then they ate them!

In Numeracy we asked the question 'What is your favourite snack?' The children each carried out their own survey, asking this question, and used a tally chart to record their results. They then presented their data as a pie chart and bar chart.

In Art and Design the children produced some great posters to sell their sandwiches (which they could have done if they hadn't eaten them). They used their knowledge of the food groups and a balanced diet to explain why their sandwiches would be a healthy purchase.

In Literacy we focused more on the environmental side of the week. We asked the question 'Should Heathrow Airport have built Terminal 5?'
The children spent some time researching the issues surrounding Terminal 5 and then organised their findings to present them in a class debate. The use of persuasive language and technical vocabulary was very impressive!
